The Howler is especially interesting because it's an encoder and an LED driver in one unit, which is probably handy if you're planning on using LED buttons. When I did my last build, the most popular options were the i-Pac and the Key-Wiz (both of which I've used and would recommend), but a bunch of new options have emerged over the last couple of years like the Howler, Xin-Mo, or KADE (never used any of 'em, so can't vouch for 'em). They're little circuit boards with dozens of terminals (or solder through-holes if you're hardcore) that you wire your joystick directionals and buttons up to. I don't have a trackball or spinner in my setup, so I can't help you there unfortunately.įor joysticks, the best approach is usually wiring everything up to a USB (or PS/2) encoder.
